The Saw Doctors – An Irish band Using Last.fm
When you love music, it’s great to work at Last.fm. We try our best to provide for bands, and for me it’s awesome when you see a “small” band taking advantage of the services we provide.
When I met my girlfriend she bought my attention to a band called The Saw Doctors, an Irish band who play very catchy folk/celtic rock; her whole family loved them and had been to see them multiple times live, and had purchased every single CD they had pressed. I had never really investigated or listened to this kind of music, and at first I was unsure what the fuss was about.
That was, until I was invited to come and see them live at the St Patrick’s day celebrations in London. The crowd they attracted was amazing, and the atmosphere incredible. Every person there was passionate about this band, singing every word and dancing along to the comical actions of “Tommy K“, named after and commemorating the DJ Tommy Kavanagh, who was a DJ on Galway’s “Super Pirate” County Sound Radio in the 80s, the decade in which I was born! Infact, The Saw Doctors formed just a year before I was born.
So where does Last.fm come in to this? We provide a service that enables users to find new music quickly and easily using recommendations engines based on the music we know you listen to. For smaller artists, this means not only a chance for their music to be heard by people who will probably want it, but also get paid for it; we have operated a scheme whereby plays on the artists musics can accrue payments which the artists can redeem against PowerPlays, a way to target music to specific people, or cash in.
For a long time, The Saw Doctors were the only artist in my top artist charts that did not have a small play icon by their name, meaning they did not have any music on our site; it’s always a shame because another aspect of our service enables users to play their “library” radio; imagine an iPod on shuffle, only without having to carry your music with you. It’s available on Last.fm anywhere, anytime, on your computer, Xbox 360, or a range of mobile and home cinema devices.
Imagine my surprise when one day I refreshed my last.fm user page to find The Saw Doctors had signed up and uploaded their entire catalogue, as well as making one of their most popular songs “N17” completely free to download! Now anyone who discovers The Saw Doctors by accident through our Similar Artist system, in their personalised recommendations, or indeed manually recommended by a friend, they can not only preview all of their songs but download a completely DRM free copy of their most popular song for absolutely nothing.

The Saw Doctor's Similar Artists on last.fm
The Saw Doctors have now had over 217,000 plays on Last.fm, from over 11,000 different users. How many of these were as a result of them adding their content to Last.fm?
I hope this will encourage other bands on the positives of sharing their talents with last.fm, especially other Irish bands; simple for the selfish reason of me being able to find them better! It’s also worth pointing out that anyone can contribute to Last.fm; my girlfriend and I have uploaded pictures of the band we took at their concerts and anyone can add those concert listings so you can find out when bands are playing and discuss it with other Last.fm users.
I urge you to listen to some music that you wouldn’t normally listen to, especially The Saw Doctors or other Irish bands… and if you aren’t a member of Last.fm I urge you to sign up and find some music you’ll love.
